Royston Landmark Set For New Look

19th November 2021 posted in BUYERS TENANTS

While we are heading towards the winter months, it is important to stay active. One of the most important features for a local area is having space for people to exercise, socialise and lead a healthy lifestyle.

There are plenty of options in and around Royston, but one of the most popular places is in front of and around the Pavilion, with the recreation ground welcoming many locals each day.

TRAKSA run the recreation ground in Therfield on behalf of Royston Cricket Club, and they received the funding, and look set to bring a new pavilion to the sports ground. Due to the pandemic, changes weren’t made in the original timeframe, so there was a need to re-apply for the funding.

Thankfully, this was successful, and all being well, there will be work carried out sooner rather than later.

Pavilion is a familiar sight in Royston

The pavilion has clocked up 70 years, so it is a familiar sight to locals. It plays home to the cricket and football clubs, as well as being the host venue for the Royston Runners. The pavilion is also a common place for people who join in with the Parkfit activities. This has been a cultural phenomenon in recent years, and it is pleasing to know that Royston residents have the chance to stay fit, and socialise with others.

It is believed that around 1,200 people currently use the pavilion, but the refit will expand the number of users. It is hoped that an extra 2,000 people will be able to benefit from the new-look pavilion.

A raft of changes are planned

The improvements will make the area an energy-efficient building and it is set to include:

·       New changing facilities

·       New toilet facilities

·       New shower facilities

·       Separate area for match officials

While plans to replace the pavilion have been cut back, reducing the cost from £156,000 to £75,000; with new planning permission applied for, it is believed that redevelopment work will still have a massive impact on the space.

Nigel Reader, deputy chairman, said: “We are delighted to be awarded this grant by North Herts Council. It will allow us to develop a new pavilion for the use of Royston Cricket Club, and Therfield and Kelshall Vets Football and Cricket Clubs and for use by the wider community. The pavilion at Therfield has been in use for around 60 years, but no longer meets today's requirements. The new pavilion will provide increased changing facilities including for officials, separate changing rooms and showers as well as additional accessible toilet facilities.”

Councillor Judi Billing, executive member for community engagement, said: “It’s wonderful that we are able to support these community facilities to provide a wealth of services to enhance the lives of our residents.”
