There is great news for people who love a beach lifestyle but who would rather spend their time close to home this summer. This is because from Tuesday August 3rd, Hitchin Market Square will be transformed into a sun and sand oasis.
More than 21 tonnes of sand will be brought to the square, with the beach taking up a 10 by 12 metre space. The transformation will last for three weeks, so you have plenty of opportunities to come along and make the most of the sunshine break.
There will be plenty to enjoy each day
The activities start at 10am every day and run through until 4pm, so there will plenty of time to relax and socialise with friends. If all you are looking to do is unwind and take it easy, you will be delighted to know that there are many deckchairs lined up for the area. Why not take a load off and make the most of the summer.
There will be fair rides and if you are looking to shop, there will be clothing stalls located around the periphery of the beach. You will also have the chance to enjoy some food and drink, which is always welcome when the weather is so pleasant.
Hitchin has enjoyed the beach setting before
This isn’t the first time the beach has been present in the heart of Hitchin, but it has been a while. We all know why things were different in 2020, so it is great to see the beach return after successful ventures in 2018 and 2019. The last time it was present, it proved popular with the local community as well as people from out of town, even though this is very much a landlocked space, and we look forward to seeing people there again.
This is the sort of thing that adds life and vitality to an area, and a local community. While it has been a tough year, and the beach by itself wont change anything, it is good to see an opportunity to smile and socialise in the local area.
There will also hopefully be a knock-on effect for local businesses, increasing the footfall of traffic in the heart of Hitchin.
Town centre manager Tom Hardy spoke to The Comet, and said; "Over the past 18 months, people have used town centres as an essential place to pick up items, and we want to build it back up again as a place where people can hang out and enjoy events and family time. I think that having the beach there will be a good way of keeping that dwell time in the town, people enjoying the square and also then also spending money in the shops and businesses."
